SAIL-SCL Kerala Limited (SSKL) is a Public Sector Steel Manufacturing Unit situated in Kozhikode, Kerala. The Company is engaged in Manufacture & Marketing of Steel Billets and TMT Steel Bars strictly adhering to BIS Specifications. SSKL is a Joint Venture Company (JVC) promoted by the Government of Kerala (GoK) and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) with equal shareholding. The Company is equipped with three 10 MT Electric Arc Furnaces, a Twin Strand Continuous Casting Machine, a 65000 MT TMT Rolling Mill and other associated infrastructure to ensure quality of processes and products.
The Company was originally incorporated in 1969 as Steel Complex Limited (SCL) with the objective of manufacturing Steel Ingots from Iron Scrap through the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Route. The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) acquired majority stake in the Company and SCL became a Kerala Government PSU in 1979. Soon afterwards, SCL entered the Constructional Steel Market by outsourcing conversion of its Billets to various Rolling Mills and marketing the Rolled Products through own Sales Depots in Kerala and neighbouring states. In 1983, the Installed Capacity was augmented to 50000 MT per annum by installing the third EAF Unit.
In 2008, SCL entered into a tie up with SAIL, a Maharatna Central PSU and the leading steel manufacturers in the country. Accordingly, the Company was restructured as a Joint Venture (JV) of GoK and SAIL. The JV came into being in 2010. Pursuant to the JV, the Company was renamed as SAIL-SCL Kerala Limited.
In 2015, a Fully Automatic TMT Bar Rolling Mill with an annual capacity of 65000 MT was commissioned at a cost of 65 Crore Rupees for producing Thermo Mechanically Treated (TMT) High Strength Constructional Steel Bars conforming to IS 1786:2008.
